Divorce mediation is a time-limited confidential process in which both you and your spouse meet with a neutral third person (the mediator) who helps you decide on the financial issues of property, spousal support, child support and the  division of parenting responsibilities;

  • Where your children will live. 

  • When your children will spend time with each parent. 

  • How parenting decisions will be made.

The goal of mediation is to give you and your spouse a place to talk about the terms of your agreement and allow you to keep the process of settlement in your control. In litigation, decision-making is turned over to a Judge or Master, who will make the decision for you. Mediation may include the parties’ attorneys, if represented, or the parties may participate in mediation without attorneys. Have you ever been caught in a finger trap puzzle?  It begins when two people put an index finger in opposite ends of the puzzle. The trick is to get out!! The initial reaction is to pull your fingers outward, but this only tightens the trap. The way to escape the trap is to push the ends toward the middle, which enlarges the openings and frees the fingers. Mediation [like the finger trap puzzle] is about coming together to open your options and free yourselves of the conflict in your relationship.  It is a process in which you and the other party discuss your disputes with the assistance of a trained impartial third person know as a mediator.

It is important for kids to be kids even in times of divorce. The emotional roller coaster that the family is on needs to be understood and slowed down. Mediation helps develop an atmosphere where parents can divorce from each other while maintaining their status as responsible mom and dad.
